I have an H4 magneto that I am trying to decide what to do with. My father hired someone to "fix" it a few years ago. The guy loaded up the whole tractor and took it off and kept it over a year before my parents demanded he bring it back. when they finally got it back, the mag was removed and partially disassembled. points and rotor are missing. dirt and grit is inside the whole unit. a couple of screws are missing. i have the blue ribbon service manual, i think i will need to read it about 50 more times before i really understand it. i have no idea if it will work when the missing pieces are replaced. Am I better off trying to fix this one or getting another one? Also, any suggestions on how to fix would be appreciated.
 
Depending on what may be missing, you might very well be better off picking up a rebuilt unit on YT, eBay or wherever. Standard parts are readily available, but some items can be tough to locate on a standalone basis. You might just choose to have yours rebuilt by someone who has the skills and parts.

I decided a few years back that I was going to learn how to rebuilt magnetos. Got a Blue Ribbon service manual and started reading. Special tools needed, special procedures to avoid contamination with iron on the magnets, etc. I sent my magneto off to Magman and got a rebuilt one in return. I think that is your best bet.
 
Magman and Mainely Magnetos are both very reputable businesses. Either would treat you well and deliver a working mag. Use cost or whatever as the basis for your decision, but I've never heard anything other than affirmatively good words spoken of either of them, with respect to the way they do business or the quality of their work or their products.
