966 questions

I have a 966 that needs some clutch adjustment. Is it the same to do as say an old chevy pickup? Do I loosen the joint under the left door on the cab and extend it? Or is it more complex? As it is right now it is very difficult to slip the clutch when hooking to other implements and engaging it is usually jerky. Also, does the 9 have a 436 or a 414? I have been told that turboing a 966 would make it a 1466 so it would have to have a 436 unturboed but tractordata has it as a 414 unturboed. If its the 414 and a turbo was added it would be a 1066 not? Also is adding a turbo to these tractors hard?

When you adjust the clutch, the TA linkage has to be adjusted as well. A 966 was built with a D414. Turboing it will give you a D414 with a turbo. You still have the smaller clutch, differential, and final drives of a 9; not the larger components of a 14.

BTW, adding a turbo to the 966 will not make it a 1066 or 1466. It is still a 966, just like the serial tag says. Sort of like throwing an overbore kit in an M and calling it a Super M. There's a lot more going for a Super than just the displacement.

There are a lot of internal engine differences between the 966 and 1066. They include: dipstick, oil pump, water pump, cylinder head, pistons and rings, more piston cooling jets in the 1066,

The thing is "jerky" because it is a button clutch; designed to grab and pull.

If it is working okay, I'd sure leave that thing alone.

Wouldn't hurt to make sure everything is adjusted properly, regardless.

Adjusting the clutch won't change the jerkiness, though.

It's a specific process detailed in the owner's manual and I&T service manual. I suggest you get one of these and use it to make sure the adjustment is right.

DK44H,In the words of Tractor Vet get a written description of how to adjust the clutch from IH and follow it to the letter. or find an experienced tractor Mech and pay him to adjust it for you.
IMO,,,Do not screw-up a good 966 by putting a turbo on it! go find a 1066 or a 1466 that is in decent shape and buy it! A slight adjustment of the pump will wake one up some, but do not get wild with the adjustment. They are great 110 to 115 hp tractors anything past that and you really need to find a good 1066 or 1466. Forget the turbo idea!!!! If you are bent on turboing it wellll.... with enough money anything can be done.
Like some of the others have said, a 966 has a D414 engine, these ol girls are best when you have them at wide open throttle with a good load like disking or cheiseling . They will go to slobbering oil past the rings when idling around doing light work like loader work where max power or RPMs are not needed.
Talk to Allen in Neb., He has on really slick 966 that he brought back from the forgotten. She is really torquee. But a 4 bottom spiunner was just a little too much for her for after a short while he drug up a 1066 and was getting her prepped to be his main tillage tractor. My statements here are simply observation of Allens workings on his operation.
Allen if I have misspoke I appoligize.
Yes I have one heck of a 966 also, I would not dream of turboing her. I belive mine is pushing 115 to 120 hp.
Good luck,

Thanks guys I really appreciate the info I got from you! I'm not really planning on turboing the 9 but I wanted to lay to rest some of the stories that I have heard over the years... My 966 only has 5000 hours on it but the cab should really come off in my opinion, the A/C doesnt work and its awefully loud. It needs a new stack too and I wanted to put a chrome straight stack on it but I'm afraid an unturboed diesel would be too deafaning to stand! My neighbor has a 4020 he couldn't stand to listen to with a striaght pipe on it and I don't wanna be like that. I really like the tractor and would like to make it more useful!

we put a turbo on our 966 several years ago. you have to plan for adding one. when it was being overhauled the upper cooling jets were drilled out. then the turbo is basically a bolt on. it takes a bigger fan, bigger oil pump, different exhaust manifold. when it was all said a done
it was dynoed at 125 hp. i didn't go out and buy any bigger equipment than i had before. it just pulled everything better especially the 5 shank soil saver. we never had an engine or rear end issue from adding the turbo. so it can be done if you use your brains.
