706 gas rear main leak

After a couple full days of hay mowing the 706 has developed a rear main leak. Always was kinda wet on the bottom but now it's a full fledged drip. Only seems to drip at idle, won't be a drop at speed. Anyways, I suppose I need to make time between this hay crop and the next to fix it. Can you replace a rear main without splitting? Any snake-oil fixes? Thanks!

It may not be a rear main seal leak as it maybe the IDPTO input shaft seal leaking giving you a faulse idea that it is the rear main seal . Your input shaft may have some ware in the spines in the pressure plate and allowing the input shaft to wobble around and allowing that seal to leak . The oil may look to be BLACK engine oil but with the crud in the bell housing it wall make the Hy Tran look like engine oil . And no ya have to SPLIT to replace either one .

Thanks Vet, I did'nt know about the other seal. That makes sense as I've seen no big drips before as the tractor is used mostly for loader work. And it hasn't seemed to increase engine oil use, even though it does use a quart now and then. After a couple days' mower/conditioner work the PTO got lots of exercise. I'll check the hytran in the morning.
