Pulled dash enough to bridge ammeter, still nothing. Then checked motor from John T"s step 8. Motor passed, but discovered one of the spring loaded arms that holds the brush to the shaft was frozen. Little monkey juice freed that up.

Then did the V/R tests from step 5. V/R failed. W/ field to Gnd & Bat bridged to Gen, got 7 plus volts at the battery.

I"m the 3rd owner of this tractor (Farmall 340) and have had it since 1992. It"s the same V/R that was on it when I got it, and maybe is the original??

Guess its time for a new one.

Thanks for everyone"s help to this point. Will post again after I get a new V/R installed.

Thanks for the feedback, the only other thing that comes to mind OTHER then the VR being bad is perhaps its wasnt well grounded??? If it was well grounded yet she still charges ONLY with a dead grounded gennys Field terminal and/or the VR's cutout relay by passed (BAT jumped to GEN terminal) the VR is bad or needs some serious adjustment. Jim or Bob get into VR adjustments a bit but I dont try to help with it over the net.

If it won't charge Without the Cutout relay being jumped, It is reasonable to replace it. Reality in some cases trumps desire. Jim
