400 hyd won't pick it up

hey fellas, i am trying to run a newer model discbine with my 400 and it won't raise it but maybe 6 to 8 inches off the ground. it is only a 9 footer with side swing tongue. is this just that i don't have enough pressure or do i have pump issues?

Some Discbines use 2 single acting cylinders for lift. Are you sure you are not running the Reservoir dry when you get that high.

If as the other respondent said, " the discbine has two single action cylinders", you may well be running out oil when it stops lifting. These systems don't have much oil capatity and can run out quick using single action cylinders. In that case we always added a 2-3 gallon reservoir high enough so it will graviety feed into the tractor reservoir.

I don't think your pump is rebuildable, have to go new.

But first I'd get a container with a hose out bottom, plumb that to the tractor fill plug to give the system extra oil. Remember also, you have to remove hydraulic breather on top of tractor reservoir, just below the control valves. Cap that port and the breather has to go on top you aditional reservoir. We used to buy small cylinder tanks for this, 50 years ago.

Running out of oil,I have a wagon that I can t lift with my D-17 till I add a gal of oil,of coarse it all blows out when I let it back down but I know what the trouble is.

Another thought, does it have helper springs on the header. I f they are backed way off it makes it a lot harder to lift.

Hydraulic pump isn't rebuildable. It's about $800+ for a new pump last time I checked.

Try adding fluid after you get the discbine lifted to where it won't go any higher. After adding fluid, I'd install a short piece of pipe, an elbow, and another longer piece of pipe in the fill hole to redirect the excess oil into a bucket when you let the discbine back down. Otherwise you will make a huge mess all over the side of your tractor.

hey fellas thanks for all the responses, i don't really think i want to replace the pump for $800. there fore i will look into the running out of oil situation and i will try tightening the helper springs and see if that does anything. i will get back with you guys this evening and let ya know... thanks!

Kirsch has the best idea for testing, raise it high as it will go then add oil. He says pipe, however I'd screw a 5-6 foot hydraulic hose in the filler plug stick the end in a pail, because as he said, "when you let it back down your going to have too much oil".

If that cures it then you know additional reservoir will work. Nice to know these things will before you spend money.

If running out of oil is your problem, then thightening the helper springs wont help. I don't know much about these discbines, however on haybines one set the helper springs so an able man could lift the header by the push bar. I would think a discbine wouldn't be much different or it would be gouging the sod.

hey fellas, well i eliminated the running out of oil concept. tightening the springs only made the situation worse. i believe i just don't have the hydraulics to raise it. i suppose i need to track down a tractor to run it it with. i greatly appreciate all the advice. thanks.

the third option- lift til it stops, and see if you can swing the tongue. If you can swing the tongue it's not an oil level problem.
