rear end oil

I wonder if you realize, that there is an inner and an outer seal on the axle housing. The axle housing has to be removed from the tractor to replace the inner seal. The outer seal is only a grease seal as the outer bearing is only lubed with grease and there is not supposed to be any oil out at the end of the axle. The inner seal is near the transmission housing and keeps the oil in the transmission and out of the axle housing. So...if you just do the outer axle seal, it probably won't cure the leak. I have a C which is similar and I have resigned myself to live with the leaking axle seal. Some grease in the fitting for the outside bearing will help reduce the leak.

Like Hugh says, make sure the level is proper. it can come up if water gets into the rear end. Level plug on the side looks pretty low to most people and they want to overfill it.

Andy: Right on, a lot of folks just can't resist over filling a tractor rear end-transmission. Then couple that with the fact of added water. More water runs down a Farmall gear shift lever than down the stack if left uncovered in the rain. that gear shift lever is much like an open port.

I know my 130 and 140, if I leave them out in rain, even 1" rainfall without a cover over the shift lever, next morning transmission will be overfull. All that and the uncovered stack will not blow black soot.

Next, these guys don't work the tractor hard enough anymore to evaporate the water from the transmission.
