OT hunting in IA.

I know this is early but I figured I'd feel around anyway. My brothers and cousins and I are planning to hunt Pheasants on public land near Ruthven Iowa this fall (November). I was wondering if anyone owning farmland in the area might be willing to give us permission to hunt on their land? There will be a total of 6 men and 4 labradors. We are all originally from Carleton MI. and are now scatted all over the country so IA. is a central location. I can tell you we're all responsible adults and safe hunters; our ages range from 27 to 55. If granted permission we would respect your land, property, livestock and equipment. I don't expect to get permission through this forum, I was hoping to get contact information so that we could meet face to face and discuss the possibility.

Hopefully we can exchange ideas tips & tricks. I have a Waukesha F12 project that has been dragging on much too long!

Not to rain on your outing. The Iowa DNR announced Tuesday that 2008 was the worst pheasant kill in recorded history 50+ years.

Just FYI

Thanks, we were going by the roadside count numbers posted by the IA DNR. According to that information the count was up 26.7% 2008 over 2007. There may be many reasons that the kill numbers were low. We're looking at an average 52.4 Pheasants counted on 30 miles of road for 2008. I haven't seen 52 Pheasants on 10,000 miles of road over the last 10 years in TN. If we don't shoot some Pheasants shame on us.

Be careful hunting in IA with a rifle. It's so flat out there, if you elevate a bit too high the bullet can come all the way around and hit you in the back of the head.

Pheasent numbers are way down here in Iowa, I think due to last years flooding and rain, loss of
CRP Acres, and a fairly hard winter, also the
number of coyotes seem to be increasing. I run a mainter on the gravel roads here in northeast Ia, I have not seen a pheasent all spring, I cover 90 miles of road, lots of turkeys out there!

I live in East Central Iowa and the pheasant numbers are down because of the last two hard winters.

I would not spend time to come here unless you want to turkey or deer hunt.

Come on out. I"m about 40 minutes from Ruthven and there is plenty of ground out here to hunt. Not as many birds as prior years, but the weather has been perfect for nesting so bird counts should be up this year. If you"re interested I could get you on my place for at least a morning or afternoon hunt. I have 11 guys coming from all over the country (I used to live in VA) as well for our annual ditch chicken shoot and we do a lot of waterfowl hunting too.
