Generator charging questions

Farmall 340, 6V POS Gnd, not charging. With analog VOM across battery only reads 6 - 6.5 volts while running.

Have followed John T"s test steps. I know that I need a new Ammeter & am in the process of taking dash panel apart while new one is on it"s way.

My question is this: while running, what should I be getting on the A & F terminals on the generator, or from the A to frame or the F to frame to prove the generator?

After reading John T's list again, I realize that I over-looked step 8, on how to check the gemerator motor. Will have to do that tomorrow in the daylight.
 
With the engine running at governed ROM and a healthy charging system, voltage measured from the generator A to ground will be between about 6.8 and 7.5 volts. If the cutout relay (inside the regulator) is not working you might see 15 – 20 volts or more. And if the generator itself is bad voltage will less than 6 volts.

The voltage between F and ground ranges anywhere from zero to 4 or 5 volts depending on engine RPM, the level of charge in the battery, amount of external load (lights, etc) and generator temperature.
 
Another suggestion is to eliminate the Amp gauge temporarily if it is bad. Without a battery to charge, some regulators will not behave at all. All charging current goes through the meter. Just connect the two terminals together (it will be OK)

The open unloaded output of a genny from its ARM post to case ground dont tell ya all that much, its what it can do to the battery voltage once running n connected via a working cutout relay. Id expect the battery sitting there to be 6.3 volts but if hooked to a good charging system Id expect battery voltage to rise to 6.5 to 7 and a lil over

My Para 5 will tell if its a genny versus a VR problem

If it passes BOTH my Para 8 Motor tests, it should charge
