OT, but look what followed me home

I was able to acquire this 1914 American Tool Works Co. lathe recently. It should be helpful in my restoration projects.

Nice! I was afraid you had no tailstock but then see you wisely removed it for transport.

My free advice is to look for a 4-jaw chuck, it is stronger plus instead of having to "accept" the centricity that the 3-jaw's scroll presents, you simply think of a runout in your head you wish to achieve, and then make it so with a dial indicator and the T-handle adjustment wrench.

I don't see any reason you couldn't belt that up to a tractor. Looks like it's been fitted up with a motor, but I'd hazard that was a belt driven affair when it was built.

Oh gosh, I got another three jaw head, a four jaw head, tooling, cutting bits, boring bars, etc. with this lathe. I got so much stuff that I haven't had time to inventory it all.

It came from Mare Island Naval Base, so it is in excellent condition. It was well maintained and in running condition.

Just plain beautiful.
My brother has a similar vintage lathe. He put a 4 speed transmission in the belt drive system to ad instant flexibility. Works great. JimN
