Farmall H for gas?

Originally, if it was a kerosene/distillate tractor, it'd have a small aux tank in front (on the right) of the main tank, and the manifold would be different, with a heat shield over it. But they've been changed so much over the years, it comes down to the serial number. If it has X1 after the number, it was made for gas only. If it has nothing after, than it's an "all fuel".

Cast numbers were cast in to their parts. The engine's cast is on the right front of the block, and should be the same as the serial number on the plate located on the left of the clutch housing.

it is true X-1 means gas only but ( high compression ) there is no real way to tell other then parts on tractor that would give it away , for instance manifold , drain on carb, exta 1 gal. gas tank, the pistons are differant , valves are too in a all fuel engine , gas only didnt have shutters unless ordered that way , also temp gauge will have a mark that engine temp. had to be to switch over to junk fuel, extra hole in the hood for the 1 gal. can , even if you have all these things on your tractor odds are its been overhauled and changed over to a higher compression piston and wont run on junk fuel anymore, i restored my H to run on all - fuel so thats how i know the internal engine parts are differant, you do loose some horsepower doing so but it makes a nice show piece because most cant burn junk fuel anymore because everyone is looking for more power

A Farmall H made to burn gasoline only fromthe factory will have a X-1 at the end of the serial number. When people started to burn gasoline more than distillate, some people changed their all fuel engine to a gas engine, in which case there would be no X-1 at the end of the serial number. A gas engine should have higher compression pistons that are made of aluminum, a gasoline burning carburetor, a gas manifold as well as a different cylinder head.

I should also add that all fuel models had a 1 gallon starting tank with the filler neck sticking through a hole in the hood where the gas engine did not. Also all fuel models were equipped with radiator shutters and control rods.
