Starting engine after rebuild

I am ready to start the SH. I want to spin the engine with the plugs out to get oil pressure. Anything to know concerning the generator other than polarizing it? Is it best to just put power to the starter? The wiring is complete, should I disconnect the wire from the starter to the battery side of the ammeter?

I would use a squirt oilcan to fill the galleries and oil filter. Just use a rubber tube to connect to the oil pressure port on the engine, and pump several oilcans full into it ( you will feel it become filled when pressure on the oilcan trigger increases )
Polarize first engine off, then just leave the key off and plugs out when cranking. It will have pressure almost immediately if you precharge it as above. Then start it. Run for 15 minutes, then retorque the head and set the valves again. JimN

If you pull the center spark plug wire from distributor to coil this prevents the ignition from firing and you can crank like a mad fool with no starting. Ask me how I know this, LOL.

I think JimN's suggestion is best, hopefully you also pre-oiled all the bearing surfaces at assembly.
