my freind has a 1942 H tractor we need to know the way to get the timeing right we have got a rebuilt dist and we have tried to find top dead center the dist can be put in 2 ways we have to hand start it to comp is top dead center and we put number 1 wire to rotor pointed to 1 and went a round with fireing order it back fired one time and has not done noting sence any help would be great we are geting a book soon thanks woody

With the cap off, Turn the engine over with the hand crank. Check the direction that the rotor is turning in the distributor. Now check the cap to see if the firing order is in the correct order for the direction it turns. It is a simple mistake that happens sometimes.

Turn the engine over until the rootor is pointing in the direction of the #1 tower of the cap. Look at the timing mark on the front pulley. If it does not line up to any of them, you are most likely off by 180 degrees.

If you can put the "DIST" in two wats you have a magneto as the drive for the dist has teeth on the dist end and can be moved one tooth at a time. If you have #1 on TDC and get the rotor pointed to the #1 tower on the cap you will be in time
