I was plowing with my 656 diesel with TA. Tripped a plow and went to reverse, tractor wont move. Put it in 1 st gear, tractor wont move, then when I released the clutch the tractor stalls out. I put it in neutral and restarted the tractor, when I release the clutch, the tractor moves forward in nuetral gear. If I place it in Reverse or 1st gear, the tractor will not move and stalls out. Any advice would be appreciated.

You have it between gears, the top is going to have to come off to reset the gear box. (I have one sitting right now that I drove home from the sale and when I got it in the drive and shifted to a lower gear it jumped out and now is in two gears,if you let the clutch out it will kill it.

Vet is correct, your shift linkage under the dash has slipped into a gear without being put there by the shift lever. It's not between two gears, but rather in two gears everytime you put it in a gear. There is probably two gears you can't get to with lever.

Sometimes if you hold the shifter and ease the clutch out you can get it out of one of the gears. If you can't get that to work have somone rock it back and forth while you put pressure on the shifter, or have them gently tug on it with another tractor, until the shifter comes out. Then work the shifter through the gear pattern a couple times to get everything lined back up. Mine has done that several times and so far have not had to take the top off the trans to fix it. Good luck with it. YC

My 544 does that (though not recently: I seem to have gotten the hang of it). No need to open up the transmission. Just take the sheet metal off one side of the deck so that you can see the linkage and pry the rods coming out of the transmission back into postion with a screwdriver (sometimes a hammer is also needed). At worst you will need to remove more sheet metal.

As you say, though, it"s worth fiddling with it a bit before taking anything apart. I can also often get it straightened out by messing around with the shifter and clutch. I wouldn"t try towing it, though. Might break something.

Thank you. I took everyones advise and removed the sheet metal and was able to easily push the stuck rod back in. All the gears work now! Thank you all soooo much. I thought it wa sgoing to need a TA and clutch - $$$$$. You guys are the best.
