IH MODEL 60 4-BOTTOM PLOW

This was my father's plow. He passed-away recently. I remember plowing many hours with it as a high-school boy. I am interested in finding out more about it. I have seen a lot of pull-type plows (this one is hydraulic lift), but have never seen one with a drag attached to it, appearing to be from the factory that way. Is this at all rare? I'm guessing that it is not.

Since this plow has the original paint on it, and I know it has been outdoors its entire life, I am wondering what years they were produced. I am trying to date the plow.

I would appreciate any information anyone could provide. I have photos from different angles that I could post, if you need additional views. Thank you very much.

Had a couple years ago, nice plows. I'm thinking late 50's, the harrow looks like a Midwest. They did not come from the factory with harrows.

Don't know what you got there, but a model 60 didn't come with a tail wheel like that. Possibly your father replaced the original assembly with a hydraulic tail wheel off a semi-mount plow, like a 540 or 550. Maybe you could post a couple more pics at different angles?

I appreciate the responses so far, and look forward to any additional ones. Do any of you have an idea about how rare (or not) the fold-down harrow (drag) might be. One response said it was not a factory option. Is that correct? I have included a couple of additional photos.

The drag is an add-on from an aftermarket manufacturer. I've seen them occasionally on older plows at farm auctions over the years.

The reason you don't see them very often is because they don't work very well. It's supposed to let you do your tillage in one pass.

That's a full castering tail wheel on the back. With the stock tail wheel backing up can be a problem.

I have a sales brochure on the model 60 & 70 plows. The tail wheel on your plow is shown as optional on the model 70 plow. In the brochure it indicates that the "full castering tail wheel allows shorter turns for the six bottom 70 plow". It also allows for higher speeds. It appears that it was an option and would probably be easier to control the plow with the add-on harrow.

Hugh, I should have stated that the caster wheel was made for the six bottom 70 plow. The brochure states that the 5, 4 & 3 bottom 70 had the model 60 type tail wheel.
