Removing Radiator from 1951 Farmall H

Could you tell me the steps that are involved in removing a radiator from a 1951 Farmall H. Do you have to remove the front end? I have a tricycle front end on my H. Thank you for your help.

What do you have to do to remove the radiator. I was told you have to take the front end off....the front tires assembly....is this true....I would like to know how do you remove the radiator from the H? What is involved?

No leave the front tire assembly alone. You have two bolts on each side of the front grill. Take the grill off. Then there is a universal joint on the steering shaft take that loose. There is a big nut on the front of the worm gear. Take that off and the top cap of the worm gear. You then can screw the steering shaft out the front of the gear box. Then unbolt the radiator and lift it out. Hope this helps you.

Thank you Roy for your help. Just looking at it I thought I had to remove the front wheels and everything. The way you described it, it doesn't sound like too bad of a job.
Have a nice weekend, Johnny

I have a question I just thought of Roy. What about the fan shroud that is attached to the radaitor? Does that have to be removed from the radiator because the fan would hit the shroud if I tried to lift it out?

Unbolt the fan shroud & leave it on the engine. Those 4 long bolts can be a pain but will come eventually. Top 2 also have the radiator brace involved to make it more interesting.
When removing the large nut on the top of the bolster (proper name for the "front end") be prepared to catch oil that is in the gearbox.
After removing the u-joint, clean off the shaft & unscrew it out of the gearbox.
Check to see if you need to replace the oil seal & gasket while you have it apart.
I would replace the lube with "corn head grease" which will lube well but doesn't leak out if the steering shaft seal is less than perfect.

Do as Roy instructs, hardest part will be negotiating the fan shroud and radiator away from the tractor. Best of luck.

If the shroud hits and you can't figure out how to maneuver the radiator around the fan, then remove the shroud. Nothing is going to "sprong" out at you throwing hundred of little parts in every direction.

I'd spray some Loosen All, or PB Blaster on those two nuts under the front frame and let it sit for a day. They are usually rusted up a lot. Also look for cotter pins through the nuts. They have to come out first. Many times the nuts atay put and the whole stud comes out of the radiator support. If that happens, chase the threads with correct die, apply some never seize, and put the whole affair back in when you reinstall radiator.
Depending on type of cap on drain pipe that may have to come out also.
Should be springs above the nuts. Replace if necessary. I use self locking nylon nuts on install so I don't have to fight those old nuts and new cotter pins.
Can I ask why you are removing it? It can be cleaned by a shop, ON the tractor. Repair of leak thoughr requires that it come off.

Thanks guys for all your help. Last year after I bought my H from my neighbor, I noticed the radiator getting hot and my neighbor says it does that and when you see the water bubbling near the cap to just let it cool down. But I didn't want that happening when I am working in the field. I took the grill off and discovered the fins of the radiator were all plugged. I spent the afternoon cleaning all the debris out of the fins to where I could see through the radiator. I also flushed the radiator out too and put in new radiator fluid...now it is nice and green and no rust color to the anitfreeze. Since I did that it has not over-heated on me. I am hopeing this did the trick. It just needed some cleaning. In case I have problems with it this year I wanted to know what I had to do in order to replace the radiator if I had to. I appreciate all the advice and instructions on what to do to remove the radiator.

Well I hope you print and file the ansers we gave you for a task you don't have to do. I could have saved a long reply.
BTW you don't fill the radiator to the top. It should only be filled to about 1 1/2 inches below the neck.
