IH 2150 Issues

Rattle can painting my sheet metal on my H. I sprayed the grill, and thought it went great. Have primer underneath. Good surface prep. Anyway the top part of the grill, has a nasty " alligator skin" appearance, disappears as the grill slopes from horizontal to vertical. I let it dry thoroughly and wet sanded all of the problem area and resprayed. This time it looks worse. Never had a problem like this, I'm assuming it may have been too warm when I sprayed it the first time, however what is the best way to repair? Can I sand it, reprime and top it off or strip completely and start over - yuck.

One thing with 2150, if you spray more than one coat you have to spray the coats within I think an hour of each other. If more than an hour elapses you have to wait 48 hours for it to completely dry to recoat or what your describing will happen. This includes 2150 over IH primer.

Paint really is a funny beast...I recently refinished a set of rims for a buddy of mine. Budget job. I just rattle-canned them with a high performance wheel paint, and clear. The paint you could recoat before 4 hours, or wait 36. After you were done painting, you HAD to shoot the clear before 4 hours, or wait 72.

I'd advise, if you have the time, stripping back to bare metal, prime, and let it cure for a couple days, then shoot a coat and follow the directions to the letter.

Set the grill out in the sun for a week. Then sand off most of the paint on the top with 220 WOD and a vibrating sander. When it's almost through to primer, hand sand it smooth with 320, and sand the rest of the grill with that 320 also.
I'd sure like to see you get a spray gun, and use the 2150 with a hardener. Those touch up guns hold 8 oz of paint and will do a grill fine and dandy. You can't do a decent job on the hood or fenders with rattle cans.

Is the primer you used compatible with the 2150? If not, the finish coat will wrinkle and lift every time. Also, is there a chance that some oil or other impureties got onto the surface before the final coat went on?

There is nothing wrong with using rattle cans. Quite a few of us paint our tractors with rattle cans and achieve excellent results. Top notch paint jobs come with experience and ONLY experience. High dollar paint guns in the hands of an in-experienced user will usually get poor results.
