300U with stiff clutch

Very good friend of mine has a 300U with a stiff clutch. Stiff enough to wear you out in short order. I tend to be a pre-1939 guy so I know next to nothing about these number series tractors. Did the 300U have a reputation of having a stiff clutch or is something wrong? If it happens to be an engineering flaw is their a fix? Please help educate me, thanks.

Here's a picture of the tractor.

Hello,
The 300 didn't have the best set up on the clutch pedal but it should wear you out, maybe you have to adjust the lincage. the TA works off the clutch you could be fighting the lincage if it is out of adjustment. I would sugest getting a manual to adjust the lincage correctly. I do alot of thoses clutches and TA's and I need the manual everytime. if the lincage is ok then it could be the pressure plate on your clutch.

Most of the problem is in the design of the clutch pedal.

You have to push down instead of forward.

I remember as a kid that I could run the clutch just fine on the row crop 460 and even the 806, but the darn 300 U we had I had to stand up and hold on tight to the steering wheel to get enough leverage to push it down.

Just the nature of the beast. I doubt there is anything wrong with it.

Archives have some good instructions for adjusting 300U clutch. If there is wear in linkage these instructions help to compensate for the wear.
Good luck!

Sprout,
The 350U clutch linkage leverages rearward on the brake housing giving it less force required. It is a direct replacement for the 300U linkage and bolts on easily if you can find one. I had a complete setup but never did it and finally sold it on this site. Most tractor salvage yards will have them. I know Stamms Equipment in Wayland, Michigan has some.

I've changed my foot placement a little, so I now keep my left foot a little farther forward and get my heel involved rather than just the toes and the ball of my foot. It seems to help.

I used the linkage from a 340 U and it fit up with maybe a slight modification to the rear of the left footboard. It made a big difference!!
