My neighbors planter tractor, left brake got smokin hot, looks like the adjuster is ball and socket,it's not pushing back on the band,is there a snap ring behind the ball and socket??TIA.

The actuator has stuck open and is not returning. You will have to remove the brake assembly, take the three springs loose that hold the actuator together and clean up the area (ramps) where the 5 balls operate. Once your inside you can see what is wrong. Remove the outside cover, you"ll have to pry and work it off of the 2 dowels (maybe 1 dowel) then disconnect the ball nut adjuster and work the actuator from the pedal and out of the brake housing. If you end up replaceing the disks you will need more shims than you have. Note on the actuator which side is out, accidentally turning it over can cause a new set of problems.

Red, what would those new problems be? Isn't the actuator disks and connecting arms all the same size so they could go either way? Just wondering.

If the ramps in the expander are worn and you can find some HI-TEMP (copper based) anti-seize it can help til you can get new ones. Also backing up tends to snap them loose.
