5288 Electrical/Lighting Problems

I have a 5288 that is giving me fits with the front lights. Bought this tractor used, and one headlight worked; while using it the only headlight quit working. Upon investigating the fuse panel has one fuse outlet empty (no power) and one that looks burned or melted. Local dealer is telling me the fuse panel is not available. It appears previous owner wired an inline fuse around this panel directly into the harness. Does anyone have similar story or suggestions about how to fix this issue or where to get a new fuse panel. While working on it tonight, problem went from bad to worse, flashing cab lights quit as well...thanks for any help...I need it...

I have been on here before explaining this problem, there were too many lights on that style of fuse holder and it would get hot over time, melt fuse holder. Recommended procedure, pull fuse holder out to get at the back, cut appropriate wires and wire in a 30 amp circuit breaker, do it also for the cab realay, other circuits are not normally a high draw so no problem. Reinsall fuse holder and mount breakers out of the way where they are accesable. The fuse holdler itself is part of a main wiring harness about 20 feet long and 50 wires and you will have same problem again shortly. Dealers should be aware of this situation.

Don’t know anything about the 5288. However I’ve run into similar problems on several different Oliver 18xx tractors. Seems the fuse holders’ terminal clips weaken over time. That caused the fuse terminal to overheat which then either blows the fuse or causes random flashing of the lights.

Solution was to bypass the factory fuse clips and feed the head/worklight, flasher, etc. switches with inline automotive blade-type fuse holders instead. Locate the fuseholders close to the starter solenoid where they can easily be reached, and toss a few spare blade fuses in the toolbox “just in case”.
