Non Detergent oil

I use Delo 30 in the winter and 40 in the summer in all my tractors and trucks. Been working just fine for a very long time. But everybody has there opinion and I wouldn't try to change them.

I would continue to use what the tractor has been using. I personally would not use high detergent in an engine that has been using non detergent for a long time.
The cleaning action of the detergent could cause problems.

I think you'll look long and hard for non-detergent oil... I haven't seen any for sale at normal outlets recently.

You should only use Farmall Brand motor oil, made in the IHC refinery and specifically marked model M motor oil. It comes in 2 types and on the top of the can...it will be plainly marked 'SUMMER' or 'WINTER'.

IE., Model M motor oil....SUMMER

Summer motor oil will make your engine run too hot in the winter and vice-versa, your engine will stay cold in the summer if you use winter oil.

Never ever use JD oil in your Farmall tractor, it will only run on 2 cylinders if you do.

Never ever run Ford motor oil in your Farmall or it will cease to run altogether.

Oh yes, I forgot to add; not any Farmall oil will work in your M, either!

Farmall A motor oil will make your M lean to one side..the left.

Farmall H motor oil will cut your horsepower.

Detergent oil does not really clean, it just keeps the solids in suspension longer and that feature tends to keep the engine cleaner.

That being said, I have switched many old tractors over to detergent oil and have never ever caused a problem with using it. I started doing this in the late sixties when you could still buy them that had never seen detergent oil.

The tractor is designed to last 50 years with an inferior oil, who knows how long they will last with modern oil? The engine can not tell if you put multi weight oil in it. It only sees 40 wt when it is hot and 10 wt when it is cold if you use 10w40. I use 20w50 because 50 wt is not too heavy once it gets hot and on some worn tractors it helps maintain oil pressure.

Nice. Kinda puts the whole thing in perspective.

Seriously, getting the "exact right oil" is nowhere near as fussy.

Is it wet? Is it slippery? Does it say "motor oil" on the jug?

If so, it will work just fine in these old 4-cylinder tractors.

Now, if you get up into the 6-cylinder gassers, things are a little bit fussy. I know ol' tractor vet likes his IH Low Ash SAE30 for 6-cylinder gassers, and that's what I'd run if I had one because that's what we always have run on the farm. Knowing how easy it is to wreck one of those 6-cylinder gas engines from personal experience...

Just think, only 20 years later, in 1066, the Normans invaded England and put all them French words in our language. Now we have cuisine instead of cookin' and pate de foie gras instead of goose liver paste. Come to think of it, I don't much like the sound of goose liver paste and probably wouldn't eat it if I knowed pate de fois gras was ground up goose livers. Last time I was in Paris, I had me some escargots and I was glad I got back home before I found out it just means snails.
