Farmall B tractor

My Farmall B tractor won't idle unless it has 75% throttle. Also, it has almost no strength and needs full throttle to move itself around. I am cosidering tearing into the governor assembly. When i pull back on the reach rod that goes to the carb the rpm and strength come up. What are your thoughts?

It sounds like you are looking at the right spot. Get a service manual and follow the governor set up procedure.

There may be wear in the governor that needs to be addressed by some new parts too. Parts are available from a Case/IH dealer. The manual will also help with disassembly/reassembly.

If you rebuild (or otherwise disassemble) your governor, pay particular attention to how the springs are installed. When it comes time to reassemble, they can go more than one way, and I seem to recall the I&T manual and Farmall manual didn't agree on which way was correct. It's been several years, I don't recall which manual was right.

Governor spring, thrust spring, thrust bearing, bumper spring . . . lots of potential causes all inside the governor. But do yourself a favor and start with synching that "reach rod" to the carb and the governor before tearing into anything.

Make sure to find and align the timing marks or be SURE to note the exact location of the mag drive slot BEFORE tearing the governor apart or you'll be back asking "HOW do I time my mag" (or distributor)".
