Is there a trick to getting the carb on an M?

I broke the pipe off my SMTA being dumb and had to get it welded back on. I have had the carb on and off twice other than this and it has been REALLY tough to get it back on.
I can't get a wrench on the back nut so the carb seems to have to go on with the manifold. I think I tried to put the manifold on first last time and that wasn't any easier.
I also have problems getting the governer to line up properly. How do you ensure it is lined up in the slot?
ANY tips are appreciated. It doesn't seem like it should be this hard.

I took an old 9/16 end wrench and cut it down until I could work it behind the carburetor. I think it is about 5 inches long. May work for you.

What I did to be able to access that rear nut is to take a 9/16" combination wrench and bend a 90 degree angle in it near the open end.

rusty, you must have an oddball "ordinary" wrench... We tried three different brands of combination wrenches, Craftsman and two different Chinese wrenches, and you couldn't even get on that back nut with either end of the wrench at any angle. What we did was grind a flat on one side of the box end of an old Chinese wrench.

It sounds like:
- The carb has to go on off the manifold.
- You need to make a 9/16 wrench to fit it.

I have always thought making a wrench would help. I don't have clearance for the open end on my new Crapsman wrench. I think I will cut a China brand wrench in half and grind down the open end some.

How do you ensure the gov end is lined up properly?

Can not remember details but have put lots of carbs on Ms and Super Ms and do not remember having many problems. Guess it depends on type manifold you have.

(quoted from post at 07:10:32 05/19/09) A short 12 point box end. Just make sure you have the gov slot in the right position on the butter fly.

Exactly, and sometimes you have to turn the wrench upside down from how you THINK it should fit.

I have a plain M but I believe the setup is identical to that on a Super M. I had to go out and buy what is called an "offset" or "obstruction" wrench from NAPA to get at that back nut. It is shaped like a "C" and allows you to get around things that might be in the way of getting at a bolt.

Also--I found you have to be careful with lining-up the tube that comes from the governor to the butterfly shaft on the carb. If it binds in anyway you will get a sticky throttle response. I attached the carb first to the manifold with the nuts kind of loose, then connect the gov. to throttle tube to the carb and tighten the screws. Then tighten the carb stud nuts.

like the other guys said, pick up a cheap wrench, heat it and bend it a little. or you can get a crowfoot wrench and go in with a rachet and extension here are crowfoot wrenches, sears sells em
