I recently bought a 1974 IH 464 Diesel. It hadn't been running in about 5-7 years. I put a battery in it and a starter solenoid and the little beast fired right up. The previos owner said "It needs clutch work" The shifters both move freely and appear to move the shafts in the transmissions but it doesn"t move at all. If it had broken the center of the clutch out it should make some kinda noise or rattle. I fear a shifter fork is broken or worse, maybe an input shaft snapped. I was going to pull the top cover off the primany transmission tomorrow and give it a look see. Any thoughts or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Hi, there is an inspection plate than can be removed on bottom of bell housing to look at the clutch. The transmission is driven by the inner shaft and the outer shaft is the PTO shaft. The PTO shaft is driven by splines on pressure plate.
The PTO shaft also drives the hydraulics. Take the cover off the top of the transmission (between hydraulic housing and dash) and check that transmission shift control rod is working properly.

Thanks Jim. I do appreciate it.

I screwed around with it this morning and found out it was a simple fix. The shaft the throw out bearing rides on was sticking. A little "Free-All" and working it back & forth and it works just fine.

I have all my gears.

I only paid $1000 bucks for this tractor and it runs & drives perfectly. Im VERY - VERY happy.

I do however need a fuel tank. The last owner had a fuel leak 10+ years ago and cobbed in a beer keg for a fuel tank. Unacceptable for what im doing with it.

Hi River, does 464 have 3 cyl D179 or 4 cyl D206 German Diesel engine? I have only seen one 464 many years ago and can't remember engine size. IIRC the 464 was slightly more HP than 454 but more $$. Most farmers including my Dad bought 454 and adjusted the injection pump to match 464. Same with 574 with D239 vs 674 with D239, farmers would buy 574 and adjust pump to match 674 to save some $$.

Sorry it took so long to get back to this thread Jim. It has the 3 cylinder D179 engine. I;ve had it about 2 weeks and I have quite a bit accomplished already.
