Farmall A Generator Color

I don't know but I have a B that has never been painted. My dad bought it used when it was just a few years old & the generator and starter are black. As far as I know, they are original.

Everything on the tractor but the gauge faces, wheels and tires, Steering wheel rim, and assorted things like lenses, and ignition high voltage wires and cap, was painted red in one pass, including the belts, hoses, and wiring harnesses. JimN

Replacement starters and generators were black, that is, IH did not repaint the Delco replacement parts red, so your dad's B had replacements.

Our 1940 H never had red starter or generator. It was built without any electrical system. The electrical system was all dealer installed so it had black starter and generator.

When the electrics were added after purchase they were black. When electrics were factory installed they were painted red. Lots of tractors left factory without electrics. Money was often the reason and then use of the tractor made electrics a needed item.

Tom: Anyone who tells you the have a 1940s Farmall with original starter and generator that have never been rebuilt or replaced, should go into politics. His or her lying is good enough.

Originals were all red. Another item to remember, a lot of these tractors were sold new without starter or generator, and those would have got replacement parts. All replacement starters and generators were black. A lot of electrical rebuilders would paint a starter black after rebuild. Not sure how well it worked, but was a bit of an attempt to stop the customer from bring in his other Farmall starter or generator, and asking for warrenty.

I dought that they were replaced. The tractor was only a few years old when dad got it. I don't remember him replacing them & I never did either. Why would they have to be replaced when new & then last all these years? I have rebuilt them with new brushes , bushings and bearings but never replaced the whole starter or generator.

Gene has a better answer than mine, it was sold without starter and generator and they were added later. Factory installed electrics were NOT black.
