I have an M Farmall with a 2 bottom plow and a neighbor wants me to plow a large field. How much do I charge him that is a fair price? Is the cost per acre? The field is clay.

Thanks in advance.

Iowa State custom farming rate survey says the average in Iowa for moldboard plowing is $14.00 an acre.

Last I plowed I got $15.00. But that was with 180HP and a 6-16 plow. I could plow 5 acres an hour. You can go from there.

It's rare that I ever suggest anyone contact the local county ag agent, but this is one of those times. They have charts showing what types of tillage cost per acre. Try that info...at least then your customer should be able to go along with that. Maybe add a little higher charge because of higher gas costs nowadays.

A "large" field with and M and 2 bottoms and clay soil? How large and how heavy is the clay? A couple of points...

A hard working Farmall M is a gas guzzler but at least gas is cheaper this year. I would give it a try on a row or two and see how fast you can expect to get it done. Then I would come up with a fair rate based on hours & gas cost and then compare it to the rates given. If it is something you want to do just to be out on your tractor anyway and a little cash pays for the gas...go for it.

When I was a kid we used to pull 2 18s with an SC Case and would average about one acre per hour. A Farmall M uses about 5 gallons per hour under heavy load from what I read on this site. I would "put a pencil to it" before I made any promises. How many acres is the field?

If he's looking to get it done with a 2 bottom and an M,chances are he cant get anybody with a bigger rig to do it.Todays custom rates shouldnt apply to this. Its older and smaller machinery,It takes longer.I'd tell him to fill'er up with gas and pay me 10 dollars per acre,or charge a flat rate of $30 an hour.It might sound high, but when You start pulling that 'Ol M you wont make much paying for Your own gas

Mark as a rule I charge $10 an acre plus fuel. But thats plowing at a faster rate than you will make with the M. But if the customer pays for the fuel you can have some fun and get a little stash for repairs.
