Need Basic Advice on Packings-F20 Regular

I need some basic advice on packings. The gear case input shaft on our Regular leaks. We replaced the packing, a while back, but not sure we did it right. We cut the packing in a "coil". Should we have cut "donuts" of packing, and staggered the splices, like you would stagger the gaps in a set of piston rings?

I've read about guys that replace the packing with a lip seal, or use one in additon to the packing. Has anyone got the number of the seal that works for this?

I've read guys that say that they should leak, because they are very old. I'm not real satisfied with that.

I gave up on the packings on my regular. I put in lip seals on both the PTO & belt pull. Worked pretty good.

Measured the ID of the housing & OD of shaft - bearing house found best ones. Then used silicone to seal the OD. Put a short length of pipe to clamp the seal with the packing nut.

I will see if I have the part numbers here.

Loren I just use the packing you can get from Rice Equipment or The Fordson House. I keep it coiled and have not had any problems with any of my tractors. They don't leak a drop. Hope that helps.

Ive fought both the rope seals, and felt packing before and got tired of it. I mesaured everything i could think of on an F-20 for lip seals and went to the local bearing house. heres what ive replaced on an F-20 with lip seals

steering input shaft on bolster
front main seal in timing cover
rear main seal
clutch output shaft
tranny input shaft
belt pulley shaft
rear PTO shaft

the only seal you cant get is the large felt seal that goes in the bull gear drop to the outside by the wheel. its just too small to get one. small being the difference in the OD, and ID

I've had the best luck by cutting rings or donuts. Cut the ring on a slant, not straight up and down and stagger the rings. Another approach is to use teflon pump packing instead of the graphite packing. You can tighten this up quite a bit without its running hot.

if i were smart the first time i did it, i would have wrote them down. ill do it the next time i Take a 20 all the way down to restore it :?
