farmall 460 pto

I need to fix/rebuild the pto on my 460, first step, remove the unit....before I break anything, how does this thing come off? I've wrestled with it a bit and don't want to do any further damage, I'm handy but inexperienced with pto work.

If possible, park the tractor so it is facing downhill, this will help save some of your hydraulic fluid. Completely detatch the exterior engagement lever. After that there should be 4 bolts to be removed. Pull it out straight back. Caution: very heavy, watch toes!!

Dumb question, does it come off fairly easy after removing the bolts? I have the bolts off and it is "loose" but seems to be held from coming off by some evil force. Does the pto shaft slide into the main drive coupler with no 'c' ring or anything to hold them together inside? Thanks so much for your input!

No c-ring that I am aware of. They can be quite sticky at first> Once they break loose it will slide out. Get help if possibe.

Like Mark W said there are no snap rings or anything holding the shafts or couplers together it all just slides in and is held in by the four bolts on the outside. It does not always pull right out as it is a rather tight fit. It helsp to spin it back and forth slightly and you also have to keep it near perfectly level or it will not pull out easy at all, also like Mark said be ready it is heavy, Id say around 70 pounds at least. Also just remember which way the shaft couplers go should one or both happen to come out or if you remove them.

Hope this helps you.
