Farmall M Power Steering

A friend of mine has a Farmall "M" that has develpoed a power steering leak. The steering is a Char Lynn unit and the pump is leaking around the shaft behing the drive pulley. I haven't disassembled the pump yet but the best I can determine is the seal measures .75 inch X 1.250 inch. My question to you guys is this: does the seal remove and reinstall with the pump in one piece or with the pump disassembled? If I have to dissassemble the pump am I going to run into any unforseen problems or is this pump a straight forward gear type hydraulic pump? Thanks.

Most of the pumps I have seen have a seal that is installed from the outside. Once you have removed the pulley you should be able to see if the seal is pressed in from the outside. there may be a snap ring to hold it in place,

the seal replacement is pretty easy, i did my m also. i took the pump apart to drive the old seal out. there is a big o ring there when you separate the pump.
