International 574 transmission question

Asking a question for a friend who does not use computer. He's got an International 574 diesel and the tractor operates well...except on the road in 4th gear going up a hill seems to slip. On the farm bushhogging runs fine in 1st and 2nd gear. Should he be worried about the transmission slipping in 4th gear going up a hill? It is only driven a short distance on the pavement between farms. Would transmission repair be expensive...maybe how much?

The transmission is all gear driven. There is nothing in it that will slip like you describe. The slippage must be in the clutch. Make sure that there is some free travel in the pedal. If the free travel is OK you are looking at a clutch replacement.

It s the clutch needing replaced or there s oil on the clutch from a leaking rear seal in the engine or front trans seal . Take inspection plate off the bottom and look for oil , had it happen to me . If clean and dry try adjusting the clutch to specs. It s not a bad tractor to split if seals or clutch is needed .
