The operator's manual calls for straight 20 weight between 32 and 80 degrees. Does anyone actually use that or is a multi viscosity OK??

dont forget those manuals are over fifty years old and the oils now a days are improved. i am sure almost all tractors have multi-grade in them now adays.a lot of places it is even hard to get straight grade oils.i think the tractor will be happy with multi-grade.

You will probably want a thicker oil in there anyway unless the engine has been rebuilt recently, it will be worn and the thicker oil will protect it better.

These engines are not fussy. Anything you put in will be 10 times better than the best available in 1950. There is nothing in modern oils that will ruin the engines.

I personally use straight SAE30 Rotella in my tractors.

I've been toying with the idea of using 10w-30 full synthetic in my working Hs. My '01 Chevy truck sure seems to like it.

In my fully rebuilt H I run Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40 full synthetic and change it every couple of years. Hoping to get a lifetime of use out of that engine, and I'm sure I will.

Every other tractor (gas or diesel) and heavy duty truck (gas) on the farm gets 15w-40 diesel oil. We have NEVER had an oil-related problem with anything, ever.

FWIW, when I was in college I had a 95 Ford Thunderbird with a 4.6 OHC v-8 in it. Not much money, so when I changed oil it got whatever was on sale, oil and filter. Never did use any oil at the 3k oil change interval, never had a problem with it. Car is still running with the next owner at 135k or so on it.
