Lo-Boy needs choke to run

I have a older Cub-Lo-Boy and it wont run right without some choke applied. once i give it some choke it runs great, it was like that when i bought it and has been this way for a while but i would like to fix it. i have taken the carb apart and cleaned it out well even the long tube that goes into the lower housing from the top. the top is flat and it does not leak fuel even if i forget to shut the fuel shut off valve.

any suggestions besides getting another carb? it still is the original 3/4 updraft, can i put a brigs carb on so i can adjust the flow of the main jet and idle?

Take it apart and try again. You probably have the float set too low, or you missed an orifice in your cleaning. Unless you're an old hat at doing carbs, it usually takes 2-3 disassembles before you get it right. Don't worry about it, happens to everyone.

Have you put a rebuild kit in?

There are only two reasons to buy a new carb:
1. The carb is smashed.
2. The carb is missing.
 
The most common reason for this is a leaking manifold. You can spray a little starting fluid or propane around the manifold and see if the engine speeds up. There can be a hazard in this if you spray too much and it catches fire. If you are unsure of the safety, try to tighten the manifold bolts, and if that does not help pull the manifold and check the gasket. This all assuming the gasket makes a good fit betweent eh carburetor and the manifold.
 
If you find no manifold or gasket leaks, remove the main jet (brass nut on the side of the bowl) and clean it really well. Use a soft copper wire to assure the opening is clear.
I know of one cub running a briggs carb and it runs quite well.
 
The best wire I've found for carb cleaning is a bread sack tie. Small and soft. Just squeeze and pull a portion of the plastic or paper off the tie to get at the wire.
