1947 H, What should I do?

I have a 47 H that I would like to sell or part out.It is a good tractor with original the original engine, starts runs and pulls good. In second gear it has a click you can hear with no load. Some of the experts tell me there is a chipped tooth on second gear. I am to old to be digging into the tranny, also I have another H and a Cub and A small farm so I dont need this tractor. I have owned it for ten years. Would I be better off to sell it as is or try to part it out? Ed

Well that is a tough question a lot of us have gone through.

You could probably make more money parting it out, but that would take lots of time stripping it all down, advertising and then selling off the parts.

Most folks think it's a shame to destroy and loose a perfectly good tractor, and would advise selling it to someone who will restore it.

Myself, I hate to see one less tractor and would try to see it saved.

Good luck,, Gene

Hi Ed,

If you part it out, that will take a lot of work on your part... much more than replacing the second gear... And you may not sell it all, and will have what's left sitting around. But the potential is that, over time, you could make more by parting it out.
If you sell it whole, you may not make as much money as you could parting it, but you would make the money all at once, and the tractor would be out of your hands will little to no work. Plus, the tractor would be preserved longer, and not lost to the ages.

Personally, I think you should sell it whole. Be honest with the buyer about what you know about second gear, which is a common problem. Depending on where you live, if it runs good and is in good shape, I'd say you could ask around $2,000.

I agree with rustfarmall and farmall ed. Lets all go. I just bought 1 H running and 1 H for parts for 800.00. Spent about 250.00 to get the running one right. I think the part's one may have life haven't got that far.

$2000 for an unrestored H is a lot to ask for most places. People advertise them for that much, but they advertise them over and over and over... They're probably looking for a "sucker" which is perfectly okay with me... If the sucker pays that much that's their perogative. They didn't do their homework.

A mechanically good H with bad tires, maybe $1000. $1200-$1500 for one with good tires. At $1500 you're getting into good tires and painted.

If you part it out you'll probably end up with several large immovable pieces, mostly the rear end, as lawn ornaments.

If you are too old to fix it, you are too old to part it out. Send it down the road for the first good offer over 1000.

I'm in NE Ohio and just seen a few H's sell. One went for $1050, other for $1200.00, both good runners. One had good paint. I also seen one with a flat tire and not running that needed allot of work that sold for $700.00. Prices here are in running order::::$800.00 to $1500.00. The later needs fenders good paint and good runner, and it is still tough to get $1500.00. Same prices in Illinois 35 miles SE of St Louis in the hear of farm country. If someone can get $2000.00 for them routinely, I can ship some.

DO NOT PART IT OUT. I don't think good running tractors should be parted out, some may agree with me, some won't. And if its something as simple as replacing a second gear. I'm currently replacing two damaged gears in my Dad's H and its not as tough of a job as it seems like.

You might check the back hubs too see if one is loose. the wheel only has to move a small amount to do a lot of clicking on the axle.
thanks Dan .R.

Hey, Mike, Looks like if that $2000 deal is good, us guys in the midwest might put together several flat beds full of H's and let you be the broker!! Ha Ha. Region of the country does make a difference. My $150,000 house here would be a Million dollar one in LA.
