Alternator Light Wiring

I just installed a new alternator on my Farmall H and all new wiring. I installed an alternator light coming off of my excite wire to one side of the new warning light and on the other side of the warning light the wire runs to my switch. Well, last night when I turned on the switch the light did not come on but the H fired right up. The light never came on and I checked the wiring connections and the bulb and they are good. I was looking at my alternator paperwork and it said...W291A, UNIVERSAL HARNESS TO INSTALL "IG"/"R" -"L" ALTERNATORS ON VEHICLES WITHOUT "NO CHARGE" INDICATOR LIGHT...Does this mean a light will not work? Thank you for your help....a little frustrated with it.

Do you have an internally regulated alternator? If so you may be wired up wrong.

The paperwork reference "..."R" - "L" ALTERNATORS..." implies the harness is intended for use with the Delco DN series (externally regulated) alternators.

----

How to tell external vs internally regulated:

The auxiliary terminals on the Delco DN (external regulator) are labelled "R" and "L" , are arranged in parallel (like this: l l), and plug in straight from the rear.

The aux terminals on the Delco SI (internal regulator) alternators are labelled "1" and "2", are arranged in line (this: - - ), and plug in from the side.

Post back what you have and we'll go from there...

Bob, My alternator paperwork says, "This alternator has an Internal voltage regulator". When looking at my plug the spade connectors in the alternator are shaped like the letter "T". The spade connector going from left to right is labeled "R" and the spade connector going up and down is labeled "L". When I plug in my alternator plastic plug there is only one wire and it plugs into the "R" {Top} connector. Thank you Bob for all your help.

Look closer.

There are dual labels... 1 and 2 and R and L right above those digits. IGNORE the R and L (as they are carryovers from a different regulator system) and go by the 1 and 2.

Bob, I am not understanding. I don't have a 1 or a 2 marked on my alternator. I have a BAT wire and a single wire coming out of my alternator out of the "R" port which the directions say I am to hook this wire to me ingnition switch. I don't have three wires like the one in your picture.

So, your alternator does not look like either of these two?

No it just has the BAT connection and the "R" and "L" connections with only the "R" being used. I bought the 12 volt conversion package from Yesterday's Tractor and they don't offer any technical help. Should I just forget about trying to wire a Alt Light?

What do R & L connection points look like? We are trying to figure out what kind of alternator you have. If that can be determined, then we might be able to help on the light. Markings, photo, numbers, connector, etc???

The connections are in the shape of a "T" with the "R" connector in the top position going left to right and the "L" connector going up and down below the "R" connector....it makes the letter "T". The plug plugs in here and only the "R" connector is being used. The directions says to connect this wire to the ignition switch. Thank you for your help.

If you compare your alternator to my photo, is the style of connector the same?

If you compare your alternator to my photo, and go by the numbers (1 and 2) visible on mine, to which terminal is the wire connected? (I'm betting "1".)

Thank you for that link to NAPA. I put my Part Number in and it came up. Please look at PART NO: NAE 12190 this looks just like my alternator. The specs are just like mine and so are the hook-ups. I really aprreciate all your help. Maybe with your help we can figure this out?

Yes, mine would be on 1 compared with yours. My connection is the "R" connector. I found a alternator on the NAPA site PArt NO: NAE 12190 that is identical to mine. If you get the chance please take a look at it and you can see what I am talking about.

Bobs ALT and wiring is the best way with the GM ALT. Be sure to install the diode in the right direction or it will feed back and keep power to the coil and keep running. The R & L are for a external reg.

Nippondenso. I believe you connect the "light" between the R & L terminals. Since you feed R from ign switch, then the 'light' is between ign sw and L.
Let me know if that works. Pretty sure it will & if not, bulb connected to L won't hurt the alternator.

So what you are saying is I should run a wire from the "L" terminal on the alternator to the ignition switch? The "R" terminal on the alternator is also connected to the switch as well. This won't damage my alternator? I am just trying to get the alt light to work. Thank you.

Light bulb has two terminals on it. Bulb terminal 1 to ign sw and bulb terminal 2 to alternator "L".
