IH 140 Roaring in Transmission

I can only run my tractor in 2nd gear, even in N, I have to depress the clutch to stop the roar (grinding) sound.....any suggestions????

Be sure it is a problem. The transmissions on the Farmalls with final down drives were loud with a singing roar. See if you can listen to another unit to see if it is natural or unusual. Also check to be sure the oil level is where it suppose to be.

Sounds like you have one or more rough bearings. Moisture gets inside from condensation and rain and over time you get pitted and corroded bearings.

The good news is that IH seems to use off the shelf bearing sizes and replacements won't be a problem from a decent bearing house. The only one that likely will be oddball is the transmission pilot bearing.

If I understand the question and 2ND is all you have. Then you have transmission problems. I do agree with L Mack they are noisy and are more so in reverse gear.

Why dont you take the top cover off to get a good look at what mite be causing the problem. Could be the oil slinger gear as they can sure make funny noises.
