on the 49 m, were the rear axles painted or left bare? on some years the axles were painted, but i cant find the breakdown on it. thanks glenn

Only if the owner painted them. IH factory had a canvas-cloth sleeve they slipped over the axle when the tractor went in the paint booth.

I painted mine to protect them but alot of people use a clear coat, a black stove paint, or just flat black. I think they use stove paint because it is tough but I don"t think you want to leave them completely bare. They will rust over time.

Y'all will probably laugh but back when these H's and M's were our main tractors and we slid the wheels in and out quite often we used to keep the bare part of the rear axles wrapped with oily burlap strip secured by binder twine. The axles were always slick and the wheels slid like a charm. We were careful to torque down the clamps evenly too....never had a problem with these wheels, they were designed pretty good, better than most of the other makes.
