PTO belt pulley belts - sources - repairs- lengths- how to?

I've done searches on internet and on here, but I'm striking out. I have a couple belts, one too long, one too short. Where does one find belts for farmall pulleys for running implements, and if I need to custom length one, how do I do that? How does one "mend" a belt?

Also, I have a front mounted Buzz Saw for my H. Just mounted it today. The belt the guy I bought it from is too short, won't even make the distance, let alone the droop. How does one calculate the length of a belt for such things, or anything for that matter? I've found a void in the typical internet info on this subject.

Please advise,

If nobody can help you on this forum go to the smokestack (steamengine forum) forum. Somebody should be able to answer all your questions there. Armand

The way I get lengths is to measure the centerline distance between the two sheaves.

Then measure the diameter of each sheave.

Add the centerline distance + 1/2*pi*dia1 + 1/2*pi*d2

That will usually get pretty close, within an inch of total belt circumference in my experience...I'd guess that's close enough for a flat belt.

Just buy a belt that's too long and cut it to fit. There is belt lacing you can buy And installs with a tool. Anybody that has a round baler can tell you about it. Or if you are creative they can be hand laced.

Take the belts you have, take the longest one open the splice if it has one or cut it. Then you can ad a piece of one of your smaller belts to make the length you need. Any of your ag dealers or old small town hardware store will be able to stich/lace the ends for you. Other wise ag dealers have round bailer belting cut to size.
good luck

Is the belt to be taut from pulley to pulley, or should it droop down? I have NEVER used a belt powered device, so this is all new to me. I know....my next question is how does one adjust tracking, or does it not need it? Sorry for the simpleton questions.

Most buzz saws I've used/saw have a belt tensioner or weighted pully to keep it tight.
If you have no tensioner I would make the belt tight so it can not be slid on easly. You may have to roll the pulleys a little to get the belt on. Most drive pulleys have a adjuster, probley a bolt in a sloted hole. You may need to use belt dressing, I use weatherstipping glue. Just a few stips the short way will do.
Good luck

They need to be fairly tight on a buzz saw.

When you get into a really hard chunk of wood they tend to want to walk off. Belt dressing helps too.

We upgraded to a PTO driven saw, that's a slick rig...
