After the original chain failed, I have replaced the 2/0 twisted chain used for the row markers several times. It just keeps stretching and then breaks. I keep the tractor at low idle when raising the markers to keep the shock load at minimum to the chain. Any ideas on how to make the chains last longer than 1 season of 10-20 acres? all the pulleys are oiled and spin freely and the chain is adjust to not go taught when the cylinder is fully extended. planting 4 acres of corn last night and the chain stretched about 3-4 links. I am purchasing standard off the shelf 2/0 by Peerless from a farm supply store.

Jack,

Are you lifting the markers with forward travel?

That is to say, if you are stopping first and then lifting the marker, it creates an extra load on the chain.

I always lift the things just before the end of the field and while still moving forward.

The chain we got at hardware stores wasn't as tough as the chain from the IH dealer. Went back to IH chain after battling with the other stuff. Those markers were hard on the chain for some reason.
