Removal of Clutch Housing from Transmission case on H

Hey guys, have a question on the removal of the clutch housing from the transmission case...I am in the process of restoring this 42 H and I had to get into the transmission to replace a gear and a few bearings. I have the belly pump out and the clutch shaft unhooked, I would like to split the two housings but am having trouble doing so, I have the two top bolts out and the four bolts inside, I can wiggle it, but cant get it loose. I am wondering if I am just hung up on the dowel on each side for alignment? I noticed they are threaded. I also noticed a "plug" in-between the two casings....could I be hung up on this? I would like to have it off to make it easier to get to the gears and for cleaning to get ready for paint...thanks guys...sorrry for the long post

Hi there... I just did the same thing Friday night. We had previously taken the engine and bolster from the tractor, and getting the center section off like you described was a challenge. What finally worked for us was getting successively larger wedges in between the two cases to pry them apart. Most likely they have been together for 67 years and are just stubborn. We used gasket scrapers, wonder bars, and different chisels. wedge them in tight, then apply pressure opposite the wedge...if the wedge is at the bottom of the case, push down on the top...if you put it on the top, lift up on the bottom. It was a very stubborn one, but it came off! Good luck!!!

There may be a bolt inside the hole for the starter, so I have been told; pull the starter and look.

The dowels are not threaded into rear case, but you can put a nut on the dowels and you may be able to pull dowel out or it will just turn in case which would indicate it is not all that tight anyway.

It is easy if you put a nut on the threaded dowels and turn them out first. They are only threaded on one end. This seems to be a common thing on the Farmall.

I found it nearly impossible to pry apart without removing the dowels first.
