5088 won't start - any ideas?

I bought a 5088 on an estate auction. It failed to start a couple of times. It had power to accessories but wouldn't turn over. If I jumped it, it would spring back to life. I checked the batteries and one was bad. Two new batteries and everything was fine for a couple months. Yesterday it did the same thing - except jumping it did no good. All I know is that if I can't fix it with a claw hammer - it must be electrical! Thanks, in advance.

You probably just slapped the new batteries in and didn't check the condition of the cables, right?

Usually problems like this are pretty simple, and the solution is a bad ground or battery cable connection. Do not trust your eyes. They may "look fine" but still have a bad connection.

Check the heavy positive cable end that is attached to the solenoid. On our 1066, the lug ate out around where it went over the solenoid stud. Even though it was tight, it was still intermittent. A star washer on both sides of the terminal lug fixed it up.

Check all your battery cables to see if they're cracked. It they are replace them. Clean all connections until shiny and that includes the area where your batteries are grounded. Once you have it running check your charging voltage across the batteries with the engine at 1/2 throttle or better with a volt meter. On a 12 volt system you should have 14.5 volts. Hal

When I install new batteries or have the cables off for some reason, I always coat the connections, battery post and clamps with antioxidzer, don't know if i spelled that correct, but the same stuff you use on aluminum electrical wiring. Your stuff won't corode.

All good suggestions. Thanks so much. I'm a part-timer. So next trip to the farm I will check all the cables, connections and voltage. I suppose electricity is a little like plumbing. But come to think of it - I'm not much of a plumber either! Be safe everyone!

And it actually was a bad ground connection (yes, it looked fine!) from the solenoid to the starter. Very simple but very annoying Sure is nice when the problem is solved and everything works again. Thanks!
