OT: My Wife's New Toy... Pictures

We picked this up today. It is a Komatsu PC38UU-2. We intend to use it for building our road (culverts and ditches), a small pond, clearing our property line for fencing, and the like. The 1st job I did was dig up a 15" sweet gum stump... It did fine.

I had thought of a backhoe, but since I already have the Farmall 504 and loader, all I needed was a hoe. I am problably going to build a small thumb and use it to restack the windrows after I burn them for the first go-round. Then what will not burn I'll dig a pit and burn the stumps that do not burn on the first pass. Then what ever is left I'll bury.

Neat toy but can you PLAY with it and always keep one thing in mind that you always bow three times to the rising sun before start up on that rice burner

Nice little machine, would really like one myself, but you wont want to get caught by the DOT with the nylon tie downs and the 1/2 ton pulling the gooseneck trailer.

Looks like exactly what I need....I am considering digging a ditch to keep stormwater from flowing across my field.

I am curious as to whether it has A/C inside the cab? I'd think it'd get pretty hot in there on a sunny day without.

I also agree with above, looks like you got it back safe but I'd want 2 more chains 'n binders for the next ride.

He may be a little heavy but there are no Federal or state regulations that say 1/2 ton can not tow goose neck trailer. If you know of any please cite them.

I agree with the 1/2 ton in the clear. Usually they (DOT) will not mess with any truck under 1-ton unless it is clear that they are a commercial hot-shot operation. I had two chains/binders and I used them on the boom and through the blade. I figured that had it pretty secure, so I used the straps for the rest. The straps claim to bs stronger than 3/8" chain (5400 lb vs. 10k lb). Those are 2" HD binders.

As for A/C, no. It does have heat. I plan to install a radio, it is a pretty quiet rig. It has limitations due to its size but I knew that before I bought it. It just takes a little longer. As for 1/2 ton's go to the TRANSPORTING FORUM and find the post about a 1/2 ton and flatbed. I posted some pictures of my previous loads with the "little engine that could"...

PS, I AVERAGED 11.2 MPG in a little over 200 miles yesterday getting this machine... A 3/4 or 1-ton gasser cannot do that

Not sure if there are any regs or resrictions when it comes to a tow vehicle,I would just hate to see the tail wag the dog so to speak. I do know that usually 1/2 tons only have load range C tires as factory equipment, and im not sure if the wheels are rated for as heavy a load as a 3/4 or 1 ton. So a person could easily overload the truck, especially with a goosneck. The main concern I always have is the braking system on a 1/2 is not as beefy. I personally prefer to have more truck than needed, but I also know that if the driver is careful and knows his rig that you can get by with less.

The truck is a beefy 1/2 ton with a trans cooler. It was set up for a camper from the factory. I have load range D tires all the way around on the truck (8 ply). I also have a good 4 axle (8 brake) controller for the brakes. I can smoke all 4 trailer brakes even with a moderate load if I jack up the gain. I keep the trailer brakes adjusted well and maintain my equipment to a "tee". I appriciate your concern, but I see 3/4 and 1-tons on the road towing that I would not pull a golf cart with. I know because I own a 79 3/4 ton that needs work before I'll ever tow a substancial load with again. I feel safer with a late model 1/2 ton than a worn-out 3/4. Not to mention I got an average of 11.2 mpg over 200 miles in 3rd (not OD) with my little 5.3L and 3.73 gears. Try that with a 3/4 or 1-ton gasser.
