Farmal A PTO attachment

I have a farmal A ser #186983 that did not come with the PTO attachment.
I purchased a used one from a scrap yard an found that when I tried to install it the main shaft when fully seated in the female bushing whinin the tractor appeared to be about 5/16" to long.
I estimate this length do to the gap left between the tractor & the PTO housing.
If the housing is tapped it just pushes the bearing out of the cup holder.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

By "attachment" do you meen the PTO shaft?
Or do you meen the "Belt Drive" pully.
The belt drive for the A and the SA are not the same!
Are you sure you have the right one?

Thanks for the replies, I'am still having a difficult time with this.
On the monday i went to a tractor scrap yard to check on other pto units to compare input shafts & found only one other one & it measured the same.
I'am thinking the only way it is going to work is
modifiying the shaft & the engaging drive sleve.
I took a look at the modle C unit & it is quite a bit longer then mine, about 6 inches.
I thought that mybe the drive shaft within my tractor might slide forward enough to give me my clearance but no such luck it only moved about a 1/16 ".
Any further comments would be great, I don't really want to start modifying things.

You must be doing something wrong. Those parts are either A length or C length. A and Super A sleeves are different. Even that shouldn't keep you from assembling it, wouldn't be able to engage it.
