Runs when you pull it...

I"ll be looking at a Farmall-B tomorrow. The seller says that runs when you pull it with a chain but conks out when you stop pulling. He understands it to have a rebuilt motor - so compression "should" be good (we"ll look into that too).

My thoughts would be the impulse in the mag. Anything else come to mind?

Check the fuel system to make sure gas is getting to the carburetor. Check the plug wires to make sure they're in the correct firing order. Hal
PS; It may be firing and not running.

Hey Ken - It wouldn't be the mag impulse.

If the impulse is not working the engine will need to be pull started. But as soon as it get's spinning fast enough for the mag to spark (200 RPM or so) it'll take off then run fine.

A couple other possibilities come to mind:

1 - The timing may be WAY late so the engine's firing thru the exhaust. When pulled it'll sorta sound like it's running but will not run on it's own. Problem could be as simple as all (4) plug wires installed 1 position off all the way around the mag cap. Or the mag drive gear may not have been properly timed when it was installed.

2 - The cam timing is off. But if that's the case it'll show up in compression test.

Good luck and post back what you find!

As the 'Cable guy sez, that funny no matter who you are"
That's the only thing I've had to make me chuckle all day!

it could be anything. If you are good enough at tinkering it could be a bargain. But I'd expect to buy it cheap. A guy that overhauls a motor and then can't make it run ain't much of a mechanic. Make syou wonder what else might be wrong.
