IH 656 whinning noise

I am in the process of selling and IH 656 tractor for a deceased neighbor. When I start the tractor up and while it is running it makes all whining noise that seems to be coming from the transmission area. I have checked the trans-hydraulic fluid level and that is okay. Someone suggested that it might be the hydraulic pump. Any other ideas of what I might do to correct this problem? Thank you for any help you can provide.

The hydraulic filter is plugged and the noise you hear is the bypass valve working overtime.

Change that filter, clean the bypass screen and it should shut right up.

I agree with all the others, but one other thought crossed my mind: Is this by chance a 656 Hydro (Hydrostatic drive) tractor? If so, the Hydro unit will whine sometimes even sitting still while the engine is running, and there will be a pronunced whining when the tractor is moving with or withut a load on it. My grandad bought new one of the first 1026 Hydros sold in this area, and the neighbors always claimed you could here it all over the neighborhood, especially when we were plowing. We"ve had several others since, and still have a gas 656 Hydro, and they all had that whine, especially when moving. My Cub Cadet 1250 (almost identical drive type of system) still whines whenever it"s in motion. It"s just a peculiarity of the beast. Just a thought.
