Super A rear axle mystery

I recently got a Super A, and while driving it I could hear a clunk from the left rear wheel. The axle was moving in and out about a half inch. I pulled the axle, bearings good, all spacers there and in the right place according to the parts book. The parts book doesn't say what the thickness of the spacers should be. I wonder if the spacers are the right ones. I can't understand what the problem can be. Please help me if you can. Thanks in advance.

The guy I got the tractor from had owned it 4-5 years. He was not repair minded himself (couldn't check the oil) so I'm sure he didn't do anything, and the repair history before that is unknown. I would think that the axle should have little or no movement in and out.

Jimmy, it was definitely the axle itself sliding in and out. All wheel weight bolts and hub bolts were real tight.

The spacer between the bull gear and the inner bearing is missing, and the bearings do not have a tight fit?
From what I can see the axle is held in place by a bolt, you are missing something.

The left side is the short axle. You say you have removed it from the tractor?

Do you have a parts manual?

EZ, I do have a parts manuel, it calls for one long spacer on the outer side of the bull gear, which I have. The manuel calls for a spacer between the bull gear and the bearing on the inner side, which I have. On the inner side of the inner bearing, I have one spacer, then a washer and then the bolt. All according to the parts manuel. I don't know if the spacers that I have are the right thickness since the book doesn't say how thick they are supposed to be. I have had the axle out, replaced the oil seal. I can't see why I have the in and out play unless my spacers are incorrect thickness. I am baffled.

I don"t have an answer for you as to what is going on. I can however tell you that one of my A"s has a custom built assembly on the back for post hole digging, I figure it"s gotta be between 1500 to 2000lbs. This tractor also has a bucket on the front. the Tractor was used for 30 + years and over that time the back end has been extremely worn. When driving along and hitting a bump, i can tell the axles are also going in and out. perhaps your tractor too had some giant weight on the back in it"s life (maybe not !) but I thought I would share one tractors story.

Terry: I haven't had one of those apart for 40 years. I'm looking at the parts diagram. Diagram doesn't show this but as I recall a 5/8" or 3/4" bolt in the end of the axle holds that all together. As I see it, if the bolt is tight, then someone either left out a washer or spacer, or used the wrong washers or spacer. I seem to remember two of those washers being quite thick, maybe even 3/8". If I'm correct, (EZ will correct me if wrong) if someone replaced those 3/8" thick washers with ordinary off the shelf washers, there is your 1/2".

Now, bear in mind it has been 40 years, I'm not 100% certain.

Terry,

Heres a picture of axles from my 130. They should be the same as your SA. The one on the left shows the thick spacer. The right one has has some extra spacers for a seeder.
Does yours look that thick?

EZ,
Thanks for the pictures. I can see from the picture that the spacer that goes between the bull gear and the inner bearing is much thicker than mine. That is probably the answer. Too bad the parts book doesn't specify thicknesses.
Much thanks to all of you for your help. I will go searching for spacers. Maybe I will get lucky and Case/IH will have them. Thanks guys.
