Rebuilding new to me Gehl 2160 Mower/conditioner. Now at the point to install hyd cyl and hose/hoses to tractor. I will be mowing with a 966. Owners manual states use either a one way or two way cylinder. Hose length is 164 inches. I have a 3 inch one way IH cylinder I could use. Save a lot of $ in two hoses.
Question is: What size cylinder requires a 3/4 OD (1/2 id) hose, and when to go to 1 inch (3/4 id) hose. Manual does not state what diam cyl to use, but looking at the mass/wt I would say 3 inch is conservative.
Bottom line, can I got to small (1/2 id ) hose with a 3 inch cyl?

My thoughts are the diameter is related to how fast it needs to fill. Using a #8 (1/2" ID) hose would probably generally be adequate if you can stand a little response time.

Using rigid metallic DOM hydraulic tubing may save some $$ over a hydraulic hose....but of course you know about the loss in flexibility and the need to support and secure the tubing. Also need a flaring tool and tube nuts. And then you'd still need some short hoses to go with it...so that might not really be a savings.

I think you could probably also get away with Sch 80 black iron pipe but it almost always has cleanliness issues...and then a NPT fitting never seals as well as a JIC fitting.

Gordo,

I have seen thousands of implements, and I have NEVER seen one with anything bigger than 1/2" hose for the hydraulic cylinders.

I would use hydraulic hose and it will withstand the vibration. The JIC fittings with swivel nuts on the hose are easy to attach. You can get straight, 45 or 90 degree swivel nuts. I would use N0.8 hose. I used reusable swivel nuts when making this spare hose on my garden tractor's hydraulic lift. Hal

Hal, that looks like a "government job"! If not, you bought some high dollar hose... I have access at work to about any hose and fitting I'll ever need.

GordoSD, I am trying to picture your application and I am thinking a 3" bore cylinder is OVERKILL! Not that there is a problem with that. My FEL has 2 1/2" bore cylinders and at 1800 psi it claims 3380 lbs force at the front pins. I am using 8-AN (1/2") from the valve then it splits to 6-AN (3/8") to each cylinder. We use 8-AN on about everything, it will take all the flow of a standard tractor w/o an issue. If you can, use JIC fittings. Like Hal said, use NPT to JIC adapters on the couplings and cylinders then JIC on the hose ends. It makes service work easier.

Good luck. Guess I'm with the others. My IH3000 loader only has 1/2" lines. Without looking I think the hoe big boom cylinder just has 5/8 or 3/4" hoses.

3" bore cylinder with 1 1/2" rod should be enough.

Go over to surpluscenter.com or baileynet.com and look at their cylinders. Pour over the spec sheets and you can see about what size the cylinders are compared to what the port size is and how big they get before they change port size.
I just looked at baileynet and it looks like they don't go to 3/4" hose (sae12) until a 5" bore cylinder with 2" rod. 4" bore still uses 1/2" ports. (this is what I call reverse engineering)
