International 300 rear end noise

I purchased a 300 international that has a whine in the rearend although it goes away when the PTO is engaged. The hydraulic pump leaks oil into the engine-could this be the cause or it a clutch on the PTO? I appreciate all replies.

I have a 300 Utility that does the same thing. I did searches in the archives here and google. It seems that the planetary PTOs make this noise when disengaged. I used the seasonal disconnect over the winter when I didn't need the PTO. Is the correct lube in the PTO housing and the level correct? I had the replace the seal between the PTO unit and the rearend housing as the transmission lube was leaking into the PTO and coming out the vent. Changed both lubes to hytran because I have the T/A.

Hyd pump and PTO are not related. Your hydraulic pump needs a seal, possibly a speedi sleeve if the shaft is grooved.

That noise is normal. They made that noise when they were brand new.
