OT: Which disc harrow will work better?

Howdy boys:
I'm to the point of getting a new disc. I'm looking at two different 20x20 versions of the same brand. One has spacing between the discs of 7-1/2 inches and is 6-1/2 feet wide. The other has 9 inch spacing between the discs and is 7-1/2 feet wide. This will be pulled by a Super M with 4.125 bore (281 cubic inches) and stepped pistons - probably 48-50 hp. I am in North Alabama where the soil has a fair amount of clay in it.
The salesman says the 9" spacing will do the better job. Not doubting him but, of the two, which do you fellows recommend?
Thanks in advance.

Mike: I've always used 7.5" spacing, but then I've always been in sandy loam soils. Your sales guy may have a point given your area and soil makeup. Either way I think the SM should handle more than 20, 20" blades. I've just bought a new disk 20, 18" blades and I'm disking in all conditions with my Farmall 130. Even today I got into some fresh plowing. I plowed down my rye cover crop yesterday, and hit it with the disk this morning. In this sandy loam the disk was running axle deep on that fresh plowing.

If I had a Super M, I'd be looking for a 28 or 32 blade disk for my conditions. You didn't say, but is this a 3 point hitch disk, your looking at. Those get quite heavy in the 28 to 32 blade size, takes a good size tractor just to pick the disk up. Might be wise to stay with 28 blade if 3 point.

Hugh: It is a Saginaw 3-point on the SM, which is why I was thinking of staying with a 20x20. Plus, I might use the Ford 3930 with the disc also.... Thanks for your advice, ol' buddy.

(quoted from post at 16:42:14 05/06/09) The 9 inch spacing will work better in wet sticky dirt. All I use in this gumbo.
That was just what I needed to know, Pete. Thanks so much.
