464 hydostatic steering leak......

I've got a 464 with a bad leak coming from the bottom of the control valve[the unit under the dash that the steering wheel is hooked to].It appears that there's what the factory calls a rotor seal and a seal spacer under the flat end plate.Has anyone changed this seal? Are rebuilt control valves available?
Also,do a 460 and a 464 share most common parts? I need a rebuilt distributor and 460 units are available through nnalert.

Well i am guessing here as myself i have never worked on a 464 but i am betting that it has the standard steering motor And to fix it you will need a 1 1/8 socket a steering wheel puller two 5 1/2 inch grade 8 1/4 x 28 bolts a 1/4 28 tap to clean out the puller holes in the steering wheel a pair of snap ring pliers a dental pick and about twenty min. of your time for the first one.Ya remove the nut that holds the wheel on have the puller holes cleaned out install the puller and tighten down tight then give the puller a rap and the wheel will come off Now remove the puller from the steering wheel remove the snap ring and set the steering wheel back on the shatf and give a real hard turn either way is fine , by doing this it should pop the seal out and just reverse the prosess.

I had this same problem, on my 464 over last winter, a real PITA to fix, if you know not much of the steering control box it is best left to the IH dealer, mine cost $225.00 to fix, but I did take him just the valve and not the whole tractor, fairly easy to get off the tractor, maybe an hour or so, more time just trying to figure out what needs to come off, and to fix the leak, it has to go back together, inside the vavle is small parts that need to be tighted enough, but not to much for the steering to work properly. Well worth the time to take it off the tractor yourself and have the dealer do it. My 2c.

You're talking about the top seal aren't you T.Vet? This leak is coming from the mating surface on the bottom of the valve where a flat plate is bolted to the housing. The bolts are tight and the schematic doesn't show any seal or gasket on that mating surface. It does, however show what they call a rotor seal and spacer which I'm thinking has gone bad and is allowing the oil to go past.
The dealer overhaul sounds pretty good to me-my customer balked at $1100 for a new valve.
Thanks for the replys - Ken
