Gear Reduction Starter Needed

I have been trying to find a gear reduction starter for a 1968 IH 3444 Diese. The engine is a BD154. The existing Delco starter # is 1107551 7M The existing starter is "not" a gear reduction starter. I have tried crossing #s for reduction starters for Oliver, & some automotive starter vendors with no luck. Endurance Power Products is also cheaking at this time. I thought I would try this forum for help as there is a great deal of depth here.
Thk's in advance for your help.

Be careful what you buy, because the gear that goes into the ring MUST have same number teeth.
At one time there was a bendex for the 656 with different gear, it didnot last very long.

Bob:
This engine has always been hard to start. Even before it was rebuilt. A number of people have told me that is the nature of this engine & to install a block heater. By the time you use the glow plugs & crank a bit the batteries take a heck of a beating. If I give it just a whiff of either it fires right up. This is at temps about 50 degs F. I though by using a gear reduction starter I would be able to stop using that nasty either and gain battery life.

Use a 1100CCA gell battery, and OOgauge cables That is the answer. A gear stasrter will turn it slower (though with a few less amps) JimN

Sounds like you need more CA's and possibly new/heavier battery cables. Does this tractor have 2 batteries? (Sounds like it does.) My 424 is set up for 2 batteries but has only had one installed in the years I've owned it, and it does pretty well with a single big battery.

I have installed 2 6 volt 900 cca batteries in series. I thought the gear reduction starter would increase cranking RPM & reduce amp draw.

WOW... have you replaced the existing starter to rule out some long-standing problem with the unit?

As I said, my little 424 with the BD154 engine cranks pretty well with ONE 12 Volt battery.

You can see the Delco starter in the photo. It's pretty hefty next to the little 4-cylinder.

Yep, like the other guys say.

You are setting yourself up for a disappointment. Ya want a diesel engine to spin faster, not slower so as to develop the heat for ignition.

If it is a hard starter, maybe it is a little weak in the wind department?

Hi, at 50F degrees requiring glow plugs plus ether there is something else wrong. With good battery, starter and 15 to 30 seconds on glow plugs the BD154 should start immediately. We had 3 x BD154 on our farm and even the one that had over 10,000 Hrs on it, it would start right up with glow plugs from about -5F. I would check glow plugs and injection pump timing.

Jim I don't use the glow plugs & either togather. I use one or the other. Of late I have been using either to save the battery costs. Once the tractor is started it is easy to restart. Just that first start of the day is a grunt. I have had the starter rebuilt but this has been a bit ago. Since it appears that a gear starter is not availabe nore the way to go. I will get a new delco starter install 00 gage cables & see what happens. It may have been the starter all along, this time it will be a complete new starter, inlcuding bendix & solenoid not just starter motor.

Use of the glow plugs is required.

You really haven't been clear as to what your problem is.

Slow cranking? That's a bad starter, or more likely, a dirty connection.

Excessive cranking? Either the glow plugs aren't working, or you aren't using them long enough.

Or, are you just worried that this is too hard on the batteries? If so you're worrying about nothing if you used the correct size batteries, bought quality batteries, and the charging system is working.

I have tried numerous 12 volt auto batteries. Then I install the battery that is listed for this tractor. It is (1) 12 volt. I installed that & new cables. The cable I used was welder cable. I can"t remember the size but it is 5/8" in diameter which was larger than the existing cable. This battery lasted approx 8 months. The charging system is working. I have replace the generator with an alternator. I have not chked the glow plugs of late but when chked eariler they were working. When using the glow plugs I leave them heat until the indicator disk is a cherry red. I have since changed to (2) 900 CCA 6 volt batteries. This setup has lasted the longest. But I would like to get back to the orig. size battery
