Farmall M radiator

Hi everyone; my M's cooling system is acting up. Here is the sequence of events

1. Last summer I installed a thermostat. Before that, the temp gauge would never move. With the thermostat, the tractor warms up to operating temp (190) and seems to run better.

2. This spring, the radiator started spewing coolant out of the overflow tube. It seems to do it when the RPMs are low. If I move the throttle UP, the coolant flow out of the overflow tube would tend to stop or slow down.

Somehow, it seems to be thermostat-related to me.

I have the radiator taken out. I thought it was leaking, but once I took it out, I realized that the place where I thought it was leaking is actually the overflow tube (left bottom corner).

What do you guys think?

When I shopped for one, there were two options:

A $28 (or so) bell shaped long one, specifically made for farmall M, or

A generic one from Oreilly, different shape but I figured it covers the hole just the same.

O'Reilly part # is 3478. Its the one I have...

How high are you filling the radiator? It should only be filled to about 1 1/2 inches below the top.

I will have to check that!

My neighbor said "Well, Andre, you are the first guy I ever seen who has a thermostat in an old M".

And in fact, the tractor did not have a thermostat when I bought it 3 years ago...

You did right by installing a thermostat. All water cooled engines need them for peak operating efficiency. The fact that yours was missing suggests that maybe the previous owner was having problems also?

Describe :somewhat loose" How much deflection in the middle between pulleys? You have to turn the water pump also, not just the fan. No more than 1/2 inch of deflection with moderate force.

Memory ain't what it used to be but I don't think they even made a 190 thermostat back in the day of the M. I would go with a 160 as was common back in the day . Some people even ran 160 in the summer and a 180 "winter" thermo in the cold weather.

For starters, you need the correct type of thermostat otherwise the reciculating bypass on the water pump will not function and you do need a thermostat for proper performance of the engine.
